A South Florida instructor turns mahjong into a business

Kari Long's Mahj on the Beach has grown from a single class into resort and corporate teaching across South Florida.

Kari Long founded Mahj on the Beach in Boca Raton, teaching her first class to eight women in June 2025, according to her website and to Boca Magazine's "Mahjong Madness" feature. In the year since, she says she has taught thousands of students.

Local station CBS12 covered her work under the headline "South Florida instructor turns Mahjong into modern movement," and her site lists team-building sessions booked at South Florida hotels and clubs, including The Boca Raton and The Breakers. It is a concrete example of the instruction side of the game moving toward premium and corporate settings.

Order of the Tile is not affiliated with Mahj on the Beach and does not sell lessons or sets. The story is noted here as coverage of how the American game is being taught as the surge continues.
