For Beginners

Six Wednesday afternoons in Commack, and the card comes separately

A six session beginner course in American mah jongg runs September 16 through October 28 on Long Island.

The Suffolk Y JCC in Commack, New York, has opened a beginner course in American mah jongg. The listing sets six Wednesday afternoons, September 16 through October 28, from 2 to 4 p.m., with no class on October 7.

Deborah Faust teaches the sessions, according to the posting, which describes hands on instruction and guided games for people starting from nothing. The course is priced at $160, or $120 for JCC members.

Students bring their own card. The listing states that participants must purchase an official Mah Jongg card through the National Mah Jongg League or a local card retailer before the first class, which is the usual arrangement for a course taught on the current year's hands.
