For Beginners

On Mercer Island, a community center runs American mahjong all August

The Stroum JCC has posted four Mondays of drop-in play, four Monday evenings, and two beginner classes priced at $25 to $35.

The Stroum Jewish Community Center of Greater Seattle, at 3801 East Mercer Way on Mercer Island, Washington, lists its American Mahjong at the J series running through August. Daytime drop-in play is posted for Mondays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm on August 3, 10, 17 and 24. Mahjong Mondays in the evening run the same four dates from 6:00pm to 8:30pm.

Two beginner classes are posted alongside the open play. The daytime class is Thursday, August 6, from noon to 2:00pm. The evening class is Monday, August 10, from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Both are listed at $25 to $35 and are described on the page as led by a local mahjong expert.

The shape of that calendar is the part worth copying. A beginner class sits on the same weekday as the open play that follows it, so a first timer has somewhere to go the following Monday. A class with no table waiting at the end of it teaches a person to play alone.

OOTT is not affiliated with the center. Details, prices and registration are on the center's own listing.
