No. A gift is a single payment and that is the end of it. When the gifted year runs out, the games simply invite them to join on their own terms. Nobody wakes up to a surprise renewal from a present.
The code adds a full twelve months onto whatever time they already have. Nothing is wasted and nobody pays twice for the same months.
When they redeem the code, not when you buy it. Codes stay good for eighteen months, so there is no rush on the unwrapping.
